Automated depalletizing at
InfectoPharm

Depalletizing for the pharmaceutical industry

InfectoPharm has to depalletize a large number of pallets every day in order to transfer packaged pharmaceutical products to an automated storage system. A MalocherBot palletizer with a NACHI MZ25 industrial robot and a PIAB gripper is used for this purpose. The cartons are placed on trays and then automatically stored thanks to an image processing system from Mech-Mind.
The depalletizing solution used processes complete pallets fully automatically: the packages are recognized, removed, and placed in pairs on blue trays, which are transferred directly to the automated storage system.

Challenges Increasing efficiency through automation

InfectoPharm pursued the goal of further increasing the efficiency and competitiveness of its logistics processes. In particular, the depalletizing process needed to be accelerated, standardized, and made more stable in order to ensure a consistent flow of materials to the automated storage system.
In addition, the available space in the production and logistics area played a central role. The company was looking for a solution that could be easily integrated into existing lines, enable high throughput rates, and at the same time remain flexible enough to allow for manual intervention and manual depalletizing. It was important that automation and manual processes could be operated in parallel without compromising the efficiency of the overall system.

Solution MalocherBot Palletizer M with LUNA OS and AI image

A Malochobot palletizer M is used, designed as a powerful depalletizing cell for industrial applications. The system is positioned directly in front of the line and designed so that, in addition to automated depalletizing, manual work with a Schmalz vacuum lifting system remains possible.
The cell combines the following core components:

  • Industrial robot: Nachi MZ25
  • Gripper: PIAB KENOS-Greifer
  • 3D camera system: Mech-Mind
  • Software: LUNA Automation OS

The Mech-Mind 3D camera automatically detects the position and orientation of the cartons on the pallet. The robot picks up the packages precisely and places them on the trays. An integrated pallet lift reduces the necessary robot movements and enables short cycle times while maintaining high process stability.

Why this solution is particularly suitable for the pharmaceutical industry

The depalletizing solution meets the key requirements of the pharmaceutical industry: stable, reproducible processes, high process reliability, and maximum flexibility. Camera-based object recognition eliminates the need for time-consuming reprogramming when changing carton formats. Product changes can be implemented quickly and efficiently—a clear advantage in regulated production environments.

Business results

Automated depalletizing enables InfectoPharm to deploy human resources specifically for higher-value, non-automated tasks. At the same time, the depalletizing process is stable, reproducible, and independent of the current staffing situation.
Thanks to intelligent 3D camera technology, the system can process different carton formats without additional programming. This increases flexibility, reduces changeover times, and sustainably increases the overall efficiency of logistics processes.

Cartons, plastic containers, bags, and more. The PIAB vacuum device and the LUNA tooling support a variety of packaging. We validate the edge formats during project planning.

Operators can add/change carton types and pallet patterns directly in LUNA. No external programming required. This reduces changeover times and keeps throughput stable during SKU changes.

We use your labor, cases/minute, pallets/hour, shifts, and downtime to estimate savings and payback times in months. Give us your numbers for a tailored model.

Dual-Pick increases the number of cartons/minute without enlarging the footprint. We map your target cycle time in the ROI estimate to pallets/hour.

Yes. We integrate safety and compliance according to EU standards (CE) with proven components (UR20, PIAB). Details on hygiene and safety devices are established during the layout review.
