Finding the right dispenser with the Unchained Marketplace
When your highly trained lab professionals have to sit around filling test tubes one after another with paint fluid for a battery of tests, it might be time to automate – at least that’s what Clariant decided! As a large company with an in-house automation team, they were not on the lookout for complete turnkey solution, but wanted to build their own with high-quality automation components. They had a robot on hand, but needed a compatible, reliable, and accurate dispensing system. And that’s what they found on the Unchained Robotics Marketplace.
Browsing the Marketplace with its wide variety of products and talking with our inhouse experts, the Clariant team decided that they would like to rent and test a couple of options before buying. Personnel shortages mean it’s time to automate the boring stuff
As a leading chemical research and manufacturing company, Clariant is always on the lookout for ways to improve quality and efficiency. And with the personnel shortage in Germany, this means that they need to make the best possible use of their laboratory technicians and scientists.
For their paint research, hundreds of tubes had to be filled with the exact same volume of a single solution every day. Doing this by hand with trained lab personnel was inefficient, time-consuming, and not a good use of their capabilities. Enter automation.
Finding the right solution at the right price
Once the problem was identified and the decision made to automate, the next step was to find a suitable automated dispensing solution to mount on a Universal Robots UR5e cobot. The Clariant team quickly found the Unchained Robotics Marketplace and pared down the number of options to just a few.
As Unchained technicians and Sales Engineers are always ready to help with product choice, Clariant set up a meeting to make sure that the potential options were suitable for the fluid characteristics that they were dealing with and could integrate easily with the UR5e. In the end, they decided to rent and test two finalists.
Try before your buy - Rent, test, purchase
After renting and testing the two components, the Clariant team decided that the ViscoTec system was the best fit for the project, they proceeded to buy it and the necessary accessories. Upon receival, they integrated the UR5e cobot and the ViscoTec preeflow system at the final process station where it now spends the day filling small test tubes with fluid while the lab techs go about more important work.
The ability to test the solution prior to purchase was crucial to our decision. We are happy to have chosen Unchained for this project.
