Automotive Industry

Even experienced users face new challenges

The automotive industry in the 1960s became the first major industry to employ robots en masse. Today, it is still the largest consumer of robots. According to the IFR, 923,000 robots were used in the automotive industry in 2019. However, for the first time in several years, the number of new installations was also lower than in the previous year. Whereas 126,000 new robots were installed in 2018, this figure will be down to 105,000 in 2019.

This is an industry that makes high demands on quality, because inferior workmanship could endanger the safety of drivers and passengers.

One of the most important trends – for the automotive industry as well – are cobots. As the industry is highly competitive and demands ever greater flexibility and adaptability, cobots are becoming increasingly common. This is a new horizon for robotics in an industry that is already highly automated relative to others.

In addition, many jobs are now left open because there are no or few qualified workers. These vacancies can also be filled by robots.
